Say Again? College and Midrash

Posted by David Ketter on October 22, 2006

I disappeared from the face of the Christian blogosphere – (and all the readers said “Oh really? No kidding.”).  I assure you, however, that I have not forgotten The Account or have just been lazy.  In fact, I have a very good excuse – or rather, many good excuses.  I am now a full-time student at Geneva College, where I am majoring in Christian Ministries with a concentration in Pre-Seminary Studies.  Among my classes are How To Read the Bible (Hermeneutics), Honors Old Testament Survey, Introduction to Philosophy, Elementary Hebrew 1, and the Sociological Imagination, in addition to a freshman transitions class and the Freshman Honors Program (in which I’ve been reading Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment).  Needless to say, I’ve been learning a great deal about the Scriptures and the Christian worldview in many different areas in the time since my last post in September.

Simultaneous to that, I have been feverishly working with Regenerate Our Culture in many different areas.  In addition to being a regular columnist writing on topics such as excellence, purity, and apathy, I was working for the better part of September preparing for the October release of Regenerated Radio – the podcasting network that is in affiliation with Regenerate Our Culture.  For this project, I am now the host of a podcast show called Midrash, which is “a word from Hebrew that means “translation” or “interpretation.” [The show] is all about understanding the issues and events that we face today from a Scriptural perspective. Midrash aims to interpret everyday life through the lens of God’s Holy Word as shown in the Bible. By using solid principles of exegesis and hermeneutics, Midrash seeks to bring the light of Truth out and strengthen every believer’s walk in Him.”

I will be posting articles of various sorts shortly – all ranging from different aspects of exegesis to philosophy, etc.  So stay tuned but, in the mean time, be sure to check out Midrash on Regenerated Radio!

Quick Note

Posted by David Ketter on August 13, 2006

The Heirs of the Church series was written up in Microsoft Word over my vacation and apparently most of my formatting did not carry over.  In the next week, I will work to correct this so stay tuned.

Anecdotes of the Founders

Posted by David Ketter on July 18, 2006

“The law established by the Creator extends over the whole globe, is everywhere and at all times binding upon mankind. [...] [This] is the law of God by which he makes his wa know to man and is paramount to all human control.” -Rufus King, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

“All of us, who were engaged in the struggle[for independence], must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor.  And have we now forgotten that powerful friend?  Or do we imagine we no longer need its assistance?  I have lived, sire, a long time; and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this Truth, that God governs in the affairs of men.” -Benjamin Franklin, delegate to the Constitutional Convention

Lack of Updates

Posted by David Ketter on May 20, 2006

My apologies for not updating.  Between finishing school up, work, and trying to get all my previous posts categorized, there has been, literally, no time.  However, for your further enjoyment, here's a link:

The Future of the Account, Continued

Posted by David Ketter on March 12, 2006

There wasn’t as much output as I had hoped for The Future of the Account post, but I believe I’m seeing the general flow of things from it. Here are the final counts:

  1. Theological – 3 votes (MVB, Matt A., and Another Faith)
  2. Theo-Philosophical – 1 vote (Mom)
  3. Theo-Historical – 2 votes (Javan and Sarah)
  4. Theo-Social – 2.5 votes (Kierstyn, D3, and Lindsey)
  5. Theo-Literary – 1.5 votes (Jenn and D3)

So, in order, they would be Theological, Theo-Social, Theo-Historical, Theo-Literary, and Theo-Philosophical. As I was thinking about this, I realized that Theo-Philosophical is already being covered over in my posts at Kingdom Knights. So that issue is solved. As far as the Theo-Literary focus goes, I would continue to write reviews of books and movies anyway (a review for Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt by Anne Rice is coming out this week!) and Karen Kovaka of Rhetorical Response does a much better job on the literary side of things. So that’s another area covered for. It just wouldn’t work as a focus. The three remaining, Theological, Theo-Social, and Theo-Historical are things I all enjoy. Yet, the more I think about it, the more I am realizing that Alex and Brett Harris, Tim Sweetman, and Kristin Braun seriously do have a handle on the Theo-Social aspect of things. So, Theological and Theo-Historical remain. Honestly, I think I can handle a combination of the two. I have a few ideas in the works and I’d actually like your feedback on them…A new series is coming shortly after the Christ the Lord review. But here are future ideas for your curiosity. Do let me know what you think:

  • A Christian examination of the Old Testament Apocrypha
  • A Christian examination of the New Testament Apocrypha
  • A Christian examination of the Hebrew Talmudim
  • A Christian examination of the Hebrew Mishnah
  • A Christian examination of the Hebrew Midrash

As you can see, all of these deal with texts that are forgotten, ignored, unknown or rejected by most Christians today. It is my belief that although none of the above are actually canonical, they can provide insights and ideas that will aid in the strengthening of the faith – whether it reveals truth or reveals the lies of the enemy.

The Future of the Account

Posted by David Ketter on February 26, 2006

Well, it’s been quite a long time since I’ve done a REAL post, hasn’t it? Well, between school, work, scholarship stuff, and the mock government, I haven’t had much time for all of it but I’m certainly going to fix that problem right now.

I was looking back at my posts over the last year and a half (The Account started on September 29, 2004) and noticed that I had posted a lot of different types of articles. And looking at that, I know that there is no way I could keep up with all of them. So, I’m putting the ideas before you on what you think the focus of The Account should be. Just comment and let me know.

  • Theological – The Account should focus mainly on Christian doctrine and theology. This includes Christian “essentials” (basic doctrines of Christianity) and “non-essentials” (mainly my own theological beliefs)
  • Theo-Philosophical – The Account should focus mainly on Christian philosophy. This includes Christian views on social issues, philosophical problems, and commentary on philosophers/philosophies, past and present.
  • Theo-Historical – The Account should focus mainly on Christian and Jewish history. This includes the history of Israel, the Church, the Church Fathers, specific movements and the rise of different denominations and cults.
  • Theo-Social – The Account should focus mainly on Christian issues in society. This includes public issues like abortion and Church issues like Israel, as well as current events in the news.

I’m looking forward to your thoughts!
