Is Debate Important?

Some today do not realize how important debate can be to a Christian who’s faith is being challenged. This ignorance can be the difference in making a person finally realize that Jesus is the only way to heaven or continue to scoff at the existence of our Creator and the infallibility of His Word. You may be wondering how debate can be useful in showing someone God’s existence. When you encounter someone that is not sure one way or the other, debate is probably not needed, simply the Gospel of Jesus Christ. However, when an atheist or an agnostic comes your way, you may be in for quite a debate (I know this from experience). If this ever happens to you, you had better be prepared because if you aren’t, they will put you in a corner so fast you won’t know where you lost.
Now that you know why debate is important to a Christian, here are some uselful tips:
- Know your Bible: although they will probably not concede that eveything is true…quoting Scripture will show that God’s Word has an answer to everything.
- Be aware of evidence that, in the skeptic’s eyes, would verify Scripture.
- Be prepared to explain the Good News about Christ and ALWAYS be a Christ-like example to them.
- Remember Ephesian 6:12 which says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorites, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
